Picture this. It’s the middle of the night and a fire breaks out near your house. You notice that the fire is just growing and growing and will reach your house by the morning. The firefighters are busy trying to take it out, but nothing seems to be stopping it from getting to you. So, what do you do? Well, you can try and put a barrier between you and the fire by gathering things that will not burn and placing it around your housing community. According to Greg Rosalsky and Cardiff Garcia, that is exactly what happened in a small winery town in California.

This crazy story ended up being successful, but it threw Rosalsky and Garcia from The Indicator From Planet Money, “DIY firefighting,” down a rabbit hole of do-it-yourself firefighting tactics. Searching for things that will help protect them from a nearby fire, they hopped on Craigslist and saw that this seemed to be a more popular search than they originally thought. Things like actual firetrucks were popping up and it all stems from trying to prevent a fire from spreading.

With the recent fires in the West Coast, it is a market that is continuously getting sales because people are trying to do their best to help the firefighters put the fires out; even if that means making themselves a firefighter in the process.
