Netflix’s documentary Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado tells the story of how the world famous Puerto Rican astrologer touched the lives of Latin American viewers everywhere. There is a memorable scene where Bobby Gilardi, beverage director of Miami restaurant Ariete, describes a cocktail he created in honor of Walter Mercado. The drink is served in a champagne coupe with a tarot card attached and has a smoky, floral flavor. After scouring the internet, we have discovered the Walter Mercado Cocktail recipe on Bobby Gilardi’s Instagram (ChampagneBobby_) and are bringing it home to you.
Walter Mercado Cocktail Recipe
- 1.5oz Sipsmith London Dry Gin
- 0.5oz Bruxo X Mezcal
- 0.5oz Yellow Chartreuse
- 0.5oz Agave Syrup
- 3 dashes grapefruit bitters
- 0.5oz CBD infused butterfly pea tea
- Large ice cube
- Combine all ingredients, minus the CBD infused butterfly pea tea
- Stir for ten seconds
- Place large ice cube in coupe glass
- Strain mixture over the ice
- Garnish the ice cube with star anise
- Add CBD infused butterfly pea tea
According to Bobby Gilardi, the purpose of garnishing the ice cube with anise is so that when the cube slides under your nose as you sip, the anise comes alive. The Walter Mercado Cocktail recipe is still a regular on Ariete’s drink menu as part of their Miami Legends selection. Since not everyone can travel to Ariete in Miami, remember to make your cocktail with mucho, mucho amor!
It’s amazing to know that the most recognizable TV astrologer of all time still lives on today.
