When Super Bowl LIV (that’s 54 for my uncultured swine) kicks-off this Sunday, father time will be well represented. Not many can say they’ve had a football career that has spanned three-decades, but seventeen-year NFL veteran—and all-around bad motherf—-r—Terrell Suggs, will be playing in his second Super Bowl with his new team, the Kansas City Chiefs.

At the age of thirty-seven, to play his position and still be playing at a high-level (four forced fumbles and 5.5 sacks in his seventeenth season) puts him in very-rare company. While we may not be gearing up for the big game this Sunday, that doesn’t mean we can’t take a look into what it’s like to train and recover like this gridiron gladiator.

What does it take to have an Edge? Explosiveness

Plyometric training is a big basis of any athlete who relies on explosive movements. But, for us regular Joes, this training style will help us burn more calories due to the higher energy output that’s required to carry explosive movements. Pairing plyometric training with HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) the changes will not only show in your physique, but your athletic skill will increase as well.

Training day in and day out is bound to take a toll on our bodies. This well-known fact has the even most elite athletes on the planet seeking out proven recovery methods to incorporate in their programming. For muscular recovery, the ever-popular cryotherapy chambers have been one instrument of choice. Normally, running at about $60 to $100 a session (some places offer first time deals) this dip is exactly what I picture what hell freezing over is like. With temperatures dipping well below the negative two-hundred-degree mark, you’re in for A1 recovery. For my all out, do-it-yourself gladiators, the old-school ice bath will suffice as well (Oh, do some yoga too!).

When Super Bowl Sunday Kicks Off!

Well! To my armchair quarterbacks, the guys still talking about high-school days, and my flag-football warriors, may we unite this Sunday for the conclusion of the NFL’s one-hundredth season. This matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers looks like it could provide the fireworks and be a Super Bowl that we will talk about forever.
